Healthy Fast Food at Pita Time

By Cathy Rose A. GarciaStaff Reporter

Fast food is usually asscociated with greasy hamburgers and salty French fries. Healthy is the last thing you would think when talking about fast food. Here comes Pita Time, a ``healthy" fast food restaurant serving different kinds of pita in Itaewon.Healthy Fast Food at Pita Time.

Pita Time says that pitas are the healthier alternative to sub-sandwiches, a not so subtle dig at Subway, the American chain famous for its sub-sandwiches. Its flyers claim pita bread only has 70 calories compared to sub-sandwich bread's 480 calories. A chicken pita is only 450 calories, versus a whopping 930 calories for a chicken sub-sandwich.

If that's not enough to convince any health-conscious, calorie-counting individual to try out Pita Time, I don't know what will. We decided to check out Pita Time to see if it really lives up to its claim that it's a ``healthier choice.'' A quick scan of Pita Time's menu shows different kinds of pita wraps, pita pizzas and salads.

Since we were feeling a bit hungry, we ordered two pita wraps, chicken Caesar and steak and cheese, as well as a Hawaiian pita pizza and a Greek salad.

The pita wraps are made in front of you, so you can easily choose which fillings, toppings and sauces you want. The whole process does remind you of how Subway makes their signature sub-sandwiches.

The chicken Caesar pita wrap is filled with romaine lettuce, dressing, bacon bits, mushroom, croutons and alfalfa sprouts, with Caesar salad dressing. The steak and cheese pita wrap, stuffed with juicy beef, cheddar cheese, lettuce, pineapple, tomato, pepper and onions, is another popular choice. One noticeable thing is the pita wraps are almost bursting with the ingredients stuffed in it.

On the other hand, Pita Time's pizzas are worth trying for the thin pita crust. A favorite is the Hawaiian pita pizza, with ham, pineapple and cheese toppings. The pita pizza could use more cheese, though. Pita pizzas come in two sizes, personal and regular size.

The Greek salad was small, but you don't expect a huge serving for only 4,500 won. It is surprisingly tasty, though, with the lettuce, feta cheese, olives and light dressing.

The restaurant itself is clean and brightly lit, and there's even a small outdoor dining area overlooking Itaewon's main street.

Overall, Pita Time serves tasty and reasonably priced pita wraps and pizza. Pita wraps cost between 5,000 won to 6,500 won and pita pizzas around 6,000 won to 6,200 won. The salads are between 4,000 won to 5,000 won.

Pita Time also delivers in the Itaewon area, for a minimum order of 10,000 won.
